The FL-20® Genz PackYears in the making, this classic design has been improved even more by ice fishing legend Dave Genz. Dave has made his “Blue Box" nearly indestructible so it will last for years of hard use. Genz redesigned the battery storage compartment and added a universal transducer holder system.
The Blue Box can also accept the full line of Vexilar accessories like a Battery Status Indictor, Vexilar Flex Light™ or even a Dual Beam IceDucer transducer. The Blue Box fits on top of a five gallon bucket for easy access and handling while fishing. Each Genz Pack Combo comes with a 12 volt, 7 amp-hour battery with charger and an Ice-Ducer transducer.

The dawn of a new era in sport fishing sonar is at hand with the FL-20 from Vexilar. Packed with features and enhanced sonar performance, the FL-20 promises to deliver live action, three-color sonar that will change the face of fishing. The FL-20 has a sleek profile with a bigger display, and two auto zoom ranges that split the display screen to let you focus in on just the bottom 6 or 12 feet of the water column. It offers target ID down to inch and displays depths down to 300 feet. The all new 20 foot Low Power range setting aids fishing in shallow water or thick weeds. The FL-20 comes with a night and day mode. The night setting allows you to cut the output of the LED display by 50 percent to avoid getting night blindness when looking at the super bright LEDs. The FL20 also comes with a low battery indicator. The FL-20 is the ultimate multi-season sonar system.

Deep Water PanfishOne of my ice fishing strategies is to go into a crowd of fisherman to see what type of spot they are fishing. By using my FL-20 I find out if its deep? Shallow? Hard or soft bottom? And how close is it to really deep water? By studying the characteristics of the spot, you can often find similar spots by looking at a contour map of the lake, and get off to a new-hot spot that's all yours.
Also, to me finesse is quickly finding fish, getting a lure down to them quickly that the will eat, and catching fish. Finesse is akin to efficiency in my mind. How long does it take me to do something? I talk about using jigs that fish heavy for their size and show up on my Vexilar depth finder display, because once I spot a fish on my FL-20 I want to drop down to them as fast as I can, even if purposely slow down the rate of fall 5-10 feet of the fish. If I'm fishing 22 feet of water, I want the jig to drop the first 15 fast and hard before I slow it down. I use the thickest line that will hang straight with the weight of my jig. Sometimes that means 2 pound test Micro Ice for panfish, and other times 8 pound test for walleyes.
Using the FL-20 with a 12 degree transducer fishing for deep water panfish and a little practice using the zoom feature properly dialing in the gain on the FL-20 one will be able to distinguish a larger panfish from a smaller one by the size of the mark on the zoom side of the screen.
One of the things I have learned over the years when fishing an area that has a mixed bag of panfish is how easy it is to tell if the finicky fish on the bottom are perch. When marking fish tight to the bottom in zoom mode I will lower the bait to several feet above them coaxing them in – if the fish zooms up to my bait and does not take it a bluegill/crappie will slowly disappear back to the bottom or out of the cone angle while a perch a lot of time moves fast back down to the bottom. Thus telling me instantly that I need to change up and alter my approach to the species that is there.
