Following the Schools
Great lakes smallmouth are notorious in the spring and fall for suspending off of points and reefs that dump into deep water. With my FL-10 I'll cruise over the deep water areas around these points or reefs looking for bait fish suspended with the gain set at a lower setting the bait fish will show up as a green signal usually only 6'-10' below the surface in 15' 40' water. The smallies are sometimes right beneath them and they show up with a bright red mark- these are the most active fish. I'll then lower my bow mount trolling motor and stay with these schools of fish throwing jerk baits or grubs. Many times thou these fish will sit tight on the bottom and will go undetected beneath these schools of baitfish. When I find some red signals on or near the bottom I'll vertical jig these fish putting my bait constantly in front of their nose agitating them into biting. This would not be possible with a LCD; a flasher provides real time information critical for keeping that bait in front of the fishes nose.
